Georgia Natural Gas (GNG) Warns Customers About Payment Scam
Many news organizations are reporting stories of a scam/hoax that falsely claims that President Barack Obama or the Obama Administration is making payment on consumers’ utility bills. This is a scam.
The method of the scam varies widely; but typically, a utility customer is contacted by phone or at their home and asked to provide personal information such as a bank routing and/or Social Security number so the scammers can apply a payment or credit to the customer’s bill. The goal of the scam is to extract enough personal information to initiate identity theft.
Consumers should never provide their Social Security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone or at their home unless they initiated the contact.
Consumers who believe they are a victim of this scam should notify the local authorities. Consumers can also help educate others by telling them that this is a scam and no such special program exists.
